New Yorkers continue to face rising living costs, a concern voiced by many. John Faso recently wrote an op-ed in The Daily News highlighting this issue. According to Faso, elected leaders in New York are ignoring crucial opportunities to alleviate the problem.
He pointed out that expenses in New York, particularly taxes and government mandates, contribute to the high cost of living. Faso criticized Gov. Hochul's $500 "inflation rebate," describing it as "political moonshine" that fails to effectively lower costs.
Faso suggested that the state's officials could immediately target legislation to cut costs. He highlighted the "scaffold law" from 1885, which he claims increases construction insurance costs by 5-7% in the state. This law introduces an "absolute liability" standard for construction site injuries, unlike other states and the District of Columbia, which use a comparative negligence standard.
Faso questioned the state's unique legal approach, stating, "Think about it. Every other jurisdiction in the United States evaluates construction accidents one way and New York does it another way. What could go wrong? Plenty."
