Changing the New York Constitution requires careful consideration. The principles and values to be included in the state's legal framework should reflect a thoughtful legislative process and an informed decision by voters who understand the long-term consequences for New Yorkers.
On this year's ballots is Proposition One, known as the Equal Rights Amendment. It is presented as necessary to enhance protection of the state's access to abortion following the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade, which left abortion laws to individual states. However, "abortion" does not appear in its text.
