Governor Kathy Hochul has officially declared March 16-17 and March 23-24 as New York State’s 2024 Maple Weekends. The Governor's proclamation comes as a celebration of the state's thriving maple industry, which ranks second in the nation in maple production, boasting nearly 2,000 maple sugar makers across New York. Governor Hochul herself marked the occasion by visiting Peaceful Valley Maple Farms in Johnstown, NY.

During her visit, Governor Hochul expressed her appreciation for the hard work of maple producers, stating, "There’s nothing sweeter than recognizing the hard work of our maple producers by visiting one of the hundreds of maple farms that are open for Maple Weekends and throughout the month of March."

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball highlighted the significance of Maple Weekends, emphasizing that they provide producers with the opportunity to connect with consumers and share their stories. He encouraged everyone to visit a local sugar maker and celebrate New York's first agricultural crop of the season.

Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight underscored the importance of maple farms to New York's agriculture and tourism economies. Knight described Maple Weekends as a great chance for residents and visitors to experience maple production firsthand, sample award-winning products, and support the industry throughout the state.

Additionally, New York Maple Producers’ Association Executive Director Helen Thomas invited the public to engage in the maple syrup production process during NY Maple Weekend. She encouraged individuals to tap a tree, taste fresh sap, experience the boiling process, and savor the final product.

Maple Weekends provide an opportunity for maple farms across New York to open their doors to the public, offering tours, pancake breakfasts, and the chance to witness the syrup-making process. The events contribute to boosting agri-tourism in the state, with nearly 200 maple sugar makers participating in 2024. The Taste NY Markets are also showcasing unique local maple products and producers throughout March, further promoting the state's maple industry.

Governor Hochul's proclamation comes in the context of New York's continuous efforts to support agri-tourism and the state's thriving maple industry, which plays a significant role in the economy.
