The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated an investigation into the unfortunate death of Nathan Scott that occurred on March 18, 2024, after an encounter with the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
According to reports, the incident took place at the intersection of Remsen Avenue and East 57th Street in Brooklyn, where "three NYPD officers fired their service weapons at Mr. Scott who had fired a semiautomatic weapon on a public street." Mr. Scott was subsequently taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
In line with New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the OSI meticulously evaluates cases where a police officer or a peace officer may be involved in the death of an individual. The law encompasses scenarios where the officer is on or off-duty, and the deceased person may be armed or unarmed, in custody or not. As stated, "If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident."
These initial details are subject to potential modifications as the investigation progresses.
