He stated, "I am appalled by the Trump Administration's repeated pattern of targeting students for exercising their fundamental First Amendment rights, targeting them for deportation on that basis." Later that same day, he criticized proposed budget cuts affecting food programs in his district and beyond. In a tweet posted at 18:53 UTC on March 26, he wrote: "In #NY12, most SNAP participants are children, the elderly, or the disabled. Donald Trump wants to cut $230B from food programs to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. This GOP scheme leaves Americans hungry – and it’s just plain cruel." He noted that House Democrats are actively opposing these measures.
