New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball delivered the State of Agriculture Address at the 193rd New York State Agricultural Society Annual Forum on January 9, 2025. The event, held at the OnCenter in Syracuse, New York, is recognized as the oldest and largest agricultural meeting in the state.
During his address, Commissioner Ball outlined progress made in 2024 across several key areas within the agricultural industry. He emphasized New York's commitment to strengthening agricultural education and workforce development. Young leaders from various state agricultural organizations, including 4-H and New York FFA, participated in a special presentation highlighting these efforts.
Commissioner Ball expressed optimism about the future of agriculture in New York: “As we hit the ground running in the new year, I am optimistic about the future of agriculture in New York. With the help of our strong network of partners, and our history of innovation and change, New York’s agricultural industry will continue forward.”
The forum's theme was "Trends, Tech, and Teachable Moments," focusing on challenges faced by farmers globally and locally while exploring opportunities for growth. The Commissioner detailed initiatives such as a $34 million Dairy Modernization grant program and a $21 million Alternative Waste Management Program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Efforts to combat food insecurity were also highlighted. Programs like Nourish New York and Farm-to-School aim to strengthen local food supply chains. Commissioner Ball stated: “Food insecurity should not be an inevitable consequence of geography or poverty; we need to see it as a solvable problem.”
The forum included workshops and panels addressing crucial topics for New York agriculture's future. Awards were presented across eight categories, recognizing achievements in areas such as farm safety and journalism.
A recording of Commissioner Ball's speech will be available on YouTube, with a transcript accessible on the Department’s website.
Established in 1832, the mission of the New York State Agricultural Society is to build a robust future for New York’s food industries through networking and educational opportunities. Agriculture generates over $5 billion annually for New York's economy.
