The New York State Department of Agriculture has expressed its condolences following the passing of former Commissioner Dick McGuire. Current Commissioner Richard A. Ball issued a statement reflecting on McGuire's contributions to agriculture in New York and beyond.
"We mourn the loss of former New York State Agriculture Commissioner Dick McGuire, who made an enduring impact on New York agriculture throughout his long life," said Ball. He described McGuire as "a fierce advocate for farmers and a natural leader."
McGuire held numerous positions in agricultural organizations at both state and national levels. His roles included serving on the Executive Committee of the American Farm Bureau Federation, acting as President of the New York Farm Bureau, and fulfilling duties as Commissioner of Agriculture.
Ball acknowledged McGuire's extensive efforts in shaping agricultural policy: "Dick rightfully received many accolades over the years for his tireless efforts to advance agriculture, as he played an important role in shaping agricultural policy and the industry as we know it today."
He extended condolences to McGuire’s family and friends, highlighting that "he will be remembered here at the Department for his friendship and service to farmers everywhere, his inspiring leadership and mentorship, his deep commitment to agriculture, and his many accomplishments that helped support and advance New York agriculture."
