Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a proclamation declaring March 29, 2024, as Vietnam Veterans Day in New York State, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our state and nation's Vietnam Veterans. The proclamation marks 51 years since the final American combat troops left the Republic of Vietnam, with landmarks across the state set to illuminate in the colors of the Vietnam Service Medal to honor those who served during this significant period.

In her statement, Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of Vietnam Veterans, stating, “Vietnam Veterans epitomize courage and selflessness, and it's essential that we recognize and honor their contributions to our country.” Commissioner Viviana DeCohen of the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services echoed this sentiment, expressing the long-overdue recognition and appreciation owed to these veterans.

With approximately 198,173 Vietnam Veterans residing in New York State, their enduring impact is undeniable. The names of the 4,119 New Yorkers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the war are memorialized on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., while the New York State Vietnam Memorial in Albany stands as a poignant reminder of their valor and sacrifice.

As part of the commemoration, several state landmarks will be illuminated in green, yellow, and red, symbolizing the colors of the Vietnam Service Medal. These landmarks include One World Trade Center, Niagara Falls, and the Empire State Plaza, among others.

The New York State Department of Veterans’ Services, which has been advocating for veterans, service members, and military families since 1945, remains committed to serving those who have served. Veterans, service members, and military families are encouraged to reach out to the Department for assistance with benefits and services.

The proclamation by Governor Hochul and the gesture to illuminate landmarks serve as a fitting tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of New York's Vietnam Veterans and their families, ensuring that their legacy of service continues to inspire future generations.
