Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the commencement of a study for a phase two on potential future enhancements along the Kensington Expressway in East Buffalo, which will also explore options for a reimagined Scajaquada Expressway. The study, to be conducted by the State Department of Transportation, will assess the traffic and environmental impacts of potential changes to both highways. This initiative aims to build on the historic progress of reconnecting neighborhoods in East Buffalo through the Kensington Expressway project.
Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of this study, stating, "By commencing a study for a second phase, we are committed to exploring new ways to reconnect the community along the Kensington and advancing a greater vision that includes the linked Scajaquada Expressway corridor, enhancing it for residents, visitors and motorists."
The Governor's vision for the project has been praised by State Senator Sean Ryan, who expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the need for projects to correct historic injustices and reconnect communities. Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes also applauded the efforts to further the goal of reconnecting communities and parks, while Assemblymember Jon D. Rivera highlighted the transformative effect a reimagined Scajaquada Expressway will have on the city of Buffalo.
The State Department of Transportation will lead the study in collaboration with the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council. State DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez expressed the importance of including the future of the Scajaquada Expressway in the planning process, stating, "This new planning study will help us chart a path forward."
The study will assess traffic and environmental effects, engage with community members, and aim to ensure the best outcome for corridor users and residents. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
In parallel with the phase two study, progress continues on the transformative Kensington Expressway project. Governor Hochul's commitment to righting the historical injustices caused by the expressway includes a $1 billion project that will provide new green space to reconnect the community. The project highlights include the construction of a tunnel, creation of new green space, and rehabilitation of local streets.
The Kensington Expressway project represents a significant step towards rectifying past wrongs and reconnecting communities in Buffalo. Governor Hochul's dedication to this initiative underscores the importance of addressing historical injustices and creating a more sustainable and connected infrastructure for the future.
