Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the commencement of a $21.3 million infrastructure improvement project on the Thruway (I-87) in Ulster and Greene counties. The project, spanning a 15.5-mile section of I-87, aims to enhance the safety and durability of the transportation system, benefiting approximately 40,000 motorists who traverse this stretch daily.
Governor Hochul emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “New York continues to make historic investments in our infrastructure to enhance the safety, durability and lifespan of our transportation system.”
Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Frank G. Hoare expressed the Authority's commitment to enhancing safety and extending the life of the roadway through critical infrastructure projects, ensuring the Thruway remains one of the safest superhighways in the nation. He highlighted the reinvestment of toll dollars into the Thruway system to improve the overall riding experience for motorists.
State Senator Michelle Hinchey lauded the project, noting its positive impact on the daily commutes of thousands of individuals. She thanked Governor Hochul and Executive Director Hoare for advancing these repairs, which are expected to result in smoother journeys for residents of Greene and Ulster counties.
Assemblymembers Chris Tague and Sarahana Shrestha also expressed their appreciation for the infrastructure improvement project. Tague commended the governor for her partnership in developing the project, emphasizing the importance of maintaining interconnected roadways. Shrestha highlighted the safety and structural integrity enhancements that the $21.3 million investment will bring to the I-87 stretch in their Assembly district.
The project contractor, Callanan Industries, Inc. of Albany, NY, secured the project through a competitive bidding process, with an anticipated completion date set for Fall 2024. Motorists should anticipate lane closures, traffic shifts, and stoppages during construction, and are reminded to adhere to posted work zone speed limits for the safety of workers and fellow travelers.
In line with efforts to improve work zone safety, Governor Hochul signed legislation for the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement pilot program, aimed at enhancing worker safety in construction zones. The program, effective in various active construction zones on the Thruway, imposes fines on motorists violating speed limits within work zones.
The infrastructure improvement project is part of the Authority’s 2024 Budget, which allocates $451 million to support the Capital Program. This increased investment is expected to fund capital projects over the next five years, benefiting a significant portion of the Thruway's lane miles and bridges.
To stay informed about travel updates and conditions, motorists are encouraged to use the Thruway Authority's mobile app for real-time traffic information and navigation assistance. Additionally, the interactive Traveler Map and TRANSalert e-mails provide valuable resources for travelers navigating the Thruway.
