Governor Kathy Hochul is encouraging individuals interested in the 2024 Empire State Fellows Program to apply before the April 1 deadline. She emphasized the program's ability to attract exceptional and diverse talent to serve in high-level positions within the administration, stating, “The Empire State Fellows Program has brought some of New York’s most exceptional talent to public service, serving as a catalyst for people to build careers where they can make a difference.”
New York State Department of Civil Service Commissioner Timothy R. Hogues echoed the sentiment, expressing the state's commitment to seeking the best and brightest for public service roles. He highlighted the opportunity for individuals to gain valuable experience across various levels of government agencies, emphasizing the importance of diversity in ideas and backgrounds, saying, “We’re looking for hard-workers and creative thinkers who will be inspired by gaining valuable experience across the highest levels of state government agencies, while learning from the many diverse faces, voices, backgrounds, ideas, and communities of those we serve in the Empire State.”
The Empire State Fellows Program offers a full-time leadership training experience for talented professionals preparing for careers as New York State policymakers. Participants will receive an annual salary of $85,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package. Successful fellows may also have the chance to continue serving as leaders in the New York State government upon completion of the program.
Engagement with the New York State government is a key component of the program, with fellows working directly with high-level policymakers in various agencies or in the Executive Chamber. This hands-on experience allows participants to collaborate with senior officials and engage in the policy-making process.
In addition to practical work experience, Empire Fellows will participate in educational and professional development programs designed to enhance their leadership skills and ethical decision-making. These initiatives include orientation courses, educational coursework, a mentoring program, and meetings with Cabinet members and government leaders.
Applications for the 2024 Empire State Fellows Program opened on January 5 and will be accepted until April 1. Those interested in applying can find more information and application instructions on the program's website.
