Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the commencement of construction at the Sullivan County International Airport, marking the beginning of a project aimed at modernizing the airport and boosting economic growth in the Catskill Region. The initiative, which received $18.5 million from the Governor’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, will see the replacement of the airport's 55-year-old terminal with a new, energy-efficient building.
The new terminal, spanning 15,000 square feet, is set to offer enhanced amenities for travelers and visitors. Governor Hochul emphasized the significance of airports, stating, "Airports are the front doors to our Upstate communities and vital economic engines for the region."
The Sullivan County International Airport, located in the heart of the Catskill Mountains, will feature a modern design with a focus on sustainability and passenger comfort. The project, with a total estimated cost of $23 million, is expected to create around 260 jobs and is scheduled for completion by the spring of 2025.
In light of the developments, various stakeholders have expressed their support and appreciation for the project. New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez praised Governor Hochul's commitment to modernizing transportation infrastructure in an environmentally sustainable manner.
State Senator Peter Oberacker highlighted the airport's importance to the local economy, emphasizing that the upgrades will further enhance its value to the Catskills. Assemblymember Aileen Gunther also lauded the project, recognizing its potential to stimulate the economy, drive tourism, and showcase the natural beauty of Sullivan County.
The Sullivan County International Airport project is part of a broader initiative to revitalize Upstate airports, with Governor Hochul announcing a total of $230 million in awards to nine airports for modernization projects. The aim is to create airports that are well-equipped for the demands of the 21st century, promoting economic growth and enhancing the travel experience across Upstate New York.
