Governor Kathy Hochul on May 10, 2023 issued a proclamation celebrating Public Service Recognition Week, which started on May 7 and will run through May 13. New York State landmarks will be illuminated in dark blue today, Wednesday, May 10, in recognition of employees working in the public sector and their contributions.
"New York State is home to hundreds of thousands of public servants who provide critical services that all New Yorkers rely on," Governor Hochul said. "On May 10, in honor of Public Service Recognition Week, I want to salute New York's public servants and show gratitude for their tireless work and commitment. I look forward to continuing our work that allows so many to live the New York Dream."
Public Service Recognition Week, which has been celebrated since 1985 during the first week of May, is a time to recognize and thank dedicated public servants from federal, state, and local governments across the country. New York State has hundreds of thousands of public employees at the state, county and city levels that perform critical functions to keep the state running and provide services to New Yorkers. Governor Hochul recently announced several provisions as part of the FY 2024 budget to attract and retain top talent and increase the diversity of the public workforce to better reflect New York State, reaffirming the Governor's commitment to make government work better for New Yorkers.
New York State Department of Civil Service Commissioner Timothy R. Hogues said, "Public servants across New York State help deliver critical services to people across the state from building roads and bridges, to providing health care services, to keeping us safe, and so much more. Here at the Department of Civil Service, we are grateful for the contributions of the public workforce, and we are working hard to recruit new employees to help grow our diverse and talented workforce to serve New Yorkers now and well into the future."
