The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has announced the opening of nominations for the 2025 Women in Agriculture Awards, coinciding with Women’s History Month. These awards will be presented on Women’s Day during The Great New York State Fair, highlighting women's contributions across New York’s agricultural sector. Now in its second year, the awards program includes ten distinct categories to acknowledge the diverse achievements within the industry.
Commissioner Richard A. Ball of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets emphasized the significant impact women have had in agriculture, stating, “From spearheading production of their own businesses to creating critical policy change, women have long led the way in all corners of the agricultural industry." He further encouraged the community to nominate strong women leaders for these honors.
Julie LaFave, the Fair Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the continuing tradition, stating, “Our Fair is deeply rooted in agriculture, and the Women in Agriculture awards are a fantastic celebration of the women who keep this incredible industry running."
Awards will be granted in various categories including the Industry Legend Award, Rising Star Award, Innovator in Ag Award, and others focusing on sustainability, animal husbandry, and diversity. Nominations are currently accepted on the department's website and will close on May 9, 2025. A committee will review nominations, and selected winners will be notified in June.
A special presentation and awards ceremony for winners will occur at The New York State Fair's Women's Day Breakfast on August 27, 2025. The Fair's lineup of events, including all concerts, is expected to offer attendance at affordable prices when it kicks off on August 20, concluding on Labor Day, September 1.
Notably, a significant portion of New York's agricultural producers are women. The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistical Service’s 2022 Census of Agriculture reports nearly 38% of New York's 57,558 producers are women. Additionally, the nearing observance of the International Year of the Woman Farmer in 2026 highlights the global contributions of women in agriculture.
The Great New York State Fair, a critical economic component to the region, operates on a 375-acre site and continues its legacy as the oldest state fair in the United States, offering various attractions and promoting New York agriculture and tourism.
Further details and ongoing updates about the awards and the event can be accessed on the fair’s website and through its social media channels.
