According to reports, Albany Democrats are contemplating delaying the special election in New York's 21st Congressional district. This move could leave approximately 800,000 residents without representation in the House of Representatives. The seat is currently occupied by Rep. Elise Stefanik, who has been nominated by President Trump for the role of Ambassador to the United Nations.

Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt criticized this potential delay, stating, "The Democrats are once again twisting the law to rig elections and silence New Yorkers." He emphasized that they would not allow changes to be made at the expense of citizens' rights. Ortt accused Governor Kathy Hochul and her allies of stripping nearly 800,000 New Yorkers of their right to representation under a partisan agenda.

Assembly Republican Leader Will Barclay also voiced concerns about the intentions behind this plan. He remarked, "Albany Democrats aren’t planning to reform New York’s election system; they’re planning to rig it." Barclay suggested that these actions were more about serving party interests than public service.

NYGOP Chair Ed Cox described the situation as an "anti-democratic power grab," accusing Albany Democrats of attempting to manipulate election timelines for partisan advantage. He asserted that North Country voters need representation now more than ever and called for a fair and timely election process.

The Republicans have highlighted past instances where they believe Democrats have engaged in undemocratic practices. These include attempts at redistricting control after independent redistricting was approved by voters, altering campaign finance rules post-election, influencing judicial appointments following court decisions against them, and passing legislation affecting local elections across New York.
