Governor Hochul Launches Effort to Protect New Yorkers Ahead of Total Solar Eclipse on April 8

Governor Kathy Hochul has initiated a comprehensive effort to safeguard New Yorkers in anticipation of the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8. The initiative, featuring the distribution of limited-edition I LOVE NY eclipse glasses and a campaign to raise awareness about scams, aims to ensure the safety of individuals during this rare celestial event.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of providing resources for New Yorkers to enjoy the eclipse safely, stating, "The total solar eclipse will be a once-in-a-generation experience for our state, and it’s critical that New Yorkers have the tools and information to enjoy it safely."

Various state officials have expressed their support for the initiative, with Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez urging vigilance to prevent falling victim to fraudulent schemes during the eclipse. Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight highlighted the state's commitment to ensuring viewer safety through the distribution of complimentary eclipse glasses.

New York State agencies, under Governor Hochul's direction, are collaborating to make the upcoming solar eclipse a safe and enjoyable experience, as emphasized by New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez. Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald stressed the importance of protecting one's eyes during the event to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience.

Additional preparations are underway to manage the influx of travelers expected for the eclipse, with New York State Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Frank G. Hoare advising motorists on safety measures. Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder emphasized the need for safe driving practices during the eclipse, including finding a suitable place to park for viewing.

Claire Rosenzweig, President & CEO of Better Business Bureau – Metropolitan New York, cautioned against potential scams associated with the eclipse, advising individuals to verify products and services independently and avoid sharing personal or financial information with strangers.
