Governor Kathy Hochul today emphasized the importance of New York’s Move Over Law being expanded to encompass all vehicles stopped on highways, in an effort to enhance overall highway safety. Effective March 27, 2024, drivers will be mandated to take necessary precautions, such as slowing down and changing lanes, to prevent accidents with any vehicles stopped along the roadway.
“The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority, especially those pulled over to the side of the road,” Governor Hochul affirmed. “If you see that you are approaching a disabled vehicle, slow down and move over as best you can to give them some space.”
The Move Over Law was originally implemented in 2010 to prevent collisions with emergency vehicles on roadways and has since been expanded to include hazard vehicles, highway worker vehicles, and tow trucks. Governor Hochul further strengthened the law in 2023 to provide protection for all vehicles stopped on the roadway.
DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, Mark J.F. Schroeder, stressed, “Each of us is responsible for doing our part to prevent tragedies on our roadways, so please follow the law. Slow down and move over when you see another vehicle stopped.”
Additionally, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee is initiating a public awareness campaign to remind individuals to adhere to the law through various media channels. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, despite all states having "Move Over" laws, a significant portion of Americans are unaware of these regulations.
Various officials and lawmakers have expressed their support for the expanded Move Over Law, acknowledging its potential to save lives and improve roadway safety. Assemblymember Ken Zebrowski commended the expansion as a logical step in preventing roadside deaths, while Senator Lea Webb thanked Governor Hochul for prioritizing driver safety and well-being.
In conclusion, the expansion of New York’s Move Over Law to include all stopped vehicles on highways is a crucial step towards reducing fatalities and injuries on the roadways. Governor Hochul's proactive measures underscore the state's commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all travelers.
