BUFFALO – New York Attorney General Letitia James has delivered over 4,500 cans of baby formula to New Yorkers in Western New York following her investigation into Walgreens Co. for price gouging during the 2022 baby formula shortage.
Attorney General James took action against Walgreens after reports of unreasonably high prices for baby formula, resulting in a settlement that includes the distribution of more than 9,500 cans of baby formula and a $50,000 penalty. The 4,668 cans of baby formula, valued at approximately $100,000, were provided to FeedMore WNY and the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network in Erie County.
"During a nationwide baby formula shortage, Western New York parents, like millions throughout the state, were terrified while trying to figure out how they would get their babies critical nutrition," expressed Attorney General James.
Tara A. Ellis, President and CEO of FeedMore WNY, expressed gratitude for the donated formula, stating, "thousands of moms and precious babies in Western New York in need of nutritional assistance will see rapid and meaningful relief."
Marixsa Sanchez-Feliciano from the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network also thanked Attorney General James for sharing the baby formula with their agency, ensuring it reaches families in need.
Local officials and legislators also commend Attorney General James for her efforts. Mayor Byron W. Brown thanked her for securing much-needed resources for vulnerable community members, while State Senator Tim Kennedy applauded the action against price gouging, emphasizing the importance of supporting local parents and organizations like FeedMore WNY and the Buffalo Prenatal Perinatal Network.
Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes, State Senator Sean Ryan, and other legislators praised Attorney General James for standing up against corporations that exploit families in need, particularly during times of crisis.
The formula distributed as part of the settlement with Walgreens will provide essential support to families in Western New York, ensuring that no child goes hungry. Attorney General James' commitment to protecting consumers and preventing price gouging has been a consistent priority in her work.
