Washington, D.C. – Following years of advocacy and fighting to secure millions in funding, U.S Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today released the following statement on the completion of the Little Sodus Bay Harbor West Pier Project:

"I visited Fair Haven in 2019 – after yet another severe flood that have devastated the community and put homes, businesses and the Little Sodus Bay’s beloved tourism industry at risk – and promised I would not stop fighting until we got the funding to jumpstart long overdue repairs,” said Senator Chuck Schumer. “The millions I secured because of our historic investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law that has funded the completion of the West Pier will restore the entrance to the harbor, making it safer and accessible to go in and out of the harbor, just in time for the summer tourism season! I thank the Army Corps of Engineers for their tremendous work and I will continue to ensure Little Sodus Bay Harbor has the support it needs to weather any storm.”

Schumer has a long history of advocacy fighting to secure the funding for the West Pier. In 2019, Schumer toured the village of Fair Haven in Cayuga County after another flood severely damaged the pier, making it difficult to access the harbor and impeding the tourism economy, and reiterated his previous calls for USACE to allocate Fiscal Year 2019 Emergency Operations & Maintenance Funding to repair the West Pier and West Barrier Bar of Little Sodus Bay Harbor in the Village of Fair Haven. In January 2022, Schumer successfully secured $10,000,000 needed to permanently repair the West Pier of Little Sodus Bay Harbor from funding boosts in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Law. The completion of this project will now allow safe access to and from the harbor to support residents and businesses in Fair Haven and preserve tourism industry for years to come.
