Mid Hudson News has published an opinion piece by Ashley Ranslow, the New York State Director of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). The op-ed emphasizes the significance of supporting local Main Street businesses during the holiday season.

Ranslow highlights the vital role that small businesses play within local communities, mentioning not only their economic contributions but also the character and value they add to Main Streets. Many small businesses throughout New York State are facing challenges including empty storefronts, quiet downtowns, inflation, high utility costs, and shifts in consumer habits. Ranslow stresses the importance of supporting these businesses by shopping and dining locally.

"Sixty-seven cents of every dollar spent at a local small business is reinvested in the community," writes Ranslow, illustrating the positive impact local spending has on local economies, including support for local taxes, governments, and schools. Additionally, an impressive "90 percent of small business owners have financially supported community or civic groups," according to the op-ed, indicating their substantial contribution to various community facets, such as youth sports leagues, community events, and school programs.

Ranslow acknowledges the convenience of large retailers and online shopping but urges consumers not to overlook the small businesses owned by their neighbors, friends, and family. She draws attention to Small Business Saturday on November 30th, tagging it as a reminder to visit Main Street businesses not just on that day but throughout the holiday season and beyond.

Ashley Ranslow concludes with a call to action: "Shop small and local this Saturday and the entire holiday season, or even better, the year ahead."
