On May 23, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand announced $3,143,643 in federal funding for Head Start projects in Cortland County, as well as more than $1.8 million for medical research in New York City. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and will be used to support child care and support services for families in Cortland County and advance critical medical research.

“Programs like Head Start ensure that young children are equipped with the tools they need to get a strong start in life,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This funding will help young children and families in Cortland County by ensuring that high-quality early childhood education and care is more accessible.”

Head Start programs provide low-income children from birth to age five with comprehensive child development programs, as well as support and services for the families. The comprehensive services Head Start and Early Head Start offer include early education, health screenings, promoting social and emotional health, nutrition, connection to other social services, and services for children with disabilities.
