New York State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball announced a $2 million initiative to support county and local fairs across the state. The 2025 Budget allocates funds to promote these fairs, increase visitor numbers, and highlight New York agriculture. A new program, Transportation for Youth to Local and County Fairs, will distribute over $300,000 to 15 organizations to facilitate youth group visits during the fair season.
“Our county and local fairs are the backbones of communities across the state,” said Commissioner Ball. “I’m excited to continue our support of county fairs, including a unique new program that helps bring more young people to experience the tradition of their local fair.”
The Ulster County Fairgrounds hosted an event where Commissioner Ball joined various stakeholders to launch several promotional initiatives as part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s commitment to revitalizing New York’s fairs.
Following a successful pilot in 2024 at Boonville Oneida County Fair, the Transportation for Youth program aims to boost youth attendance at fairs statewide by covering transportation costs. Participating organizations include Albany, Schenectady, Greene Counties Agricultural and Historical Society; Rensselaer County Agricultural & Horticultural Society; Oswego County Agricultural Society; among others.
The Agricultural Fairgrounds Advertising, Promotion, and Education Program is providing $500,000 in funding for fair promotion efforts. Each eligible fair sponsor receives $10,000 aimed at enhancing visitor participation and appreciation of agriculture.
A marketing campaign titled “Best Day Ever (All Summer Long)” encourages community engagement with county and local fairs through social media ads and other advertising channels.
The New York State County and Local Fairs Passport Program returns for its second year. It encourages families to visit multiple fairs by collecting stamps in a passport booklet available at select locations.
Ulster County Fair Manager Gary Newkirk expressed pride in hosting the kickoff event: “The support that New York State Ag and Markets has provided…is making it possible for our fairs to grow and remain viable for many years.”
New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs President Lauren Delaney emphasized the importance of state funding: “County fairs celebrate local agriculture…creating lasting memories and economic opportunities for generations.”
Additional education and marketing initiatives bring total state support for county and local fairs this year to $2 million.
