St. John’s University honored eight alumni for their achievements and service during the Alumni Convocation held on May 3 in the D’Angelo Center.

The event recognized graduates whose personal and professional lives reflect the values of a Vincentian education, which is central to St. John’s University’s mission as a Catholic and Vincentian institution dedicated to liberal arts education, according to the official website. The convocation also highlighted the importance of giving back, with Christian P. Vaupel, Ed.D., Senior Vice President for Advancement, saying, “Today, we honor a group of individuals who hold St. John’s close to their hearts. Their dedication and service continue to play a vital role in the life of our University, setting a powerful example for current students and future generations.”

Vaupel added that the gathering celebrated “the spirit of giving and engagement that drives our Hearts on Fire campaign,” emphasizing how alumni support enables academic excellence at St. John’s.

Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John’s University—who has held this position according to the official website—addressed graduating seniors from the President’s Society at the ceremony: “I think it’s important for you to see success stories and be inspired,” he said. “And for us as a University to lift great achievers and celebrate and be grateful for what they’ve done to inspire our students and to thank God for the lives that they lead.”

Honorees reflected on their experiences at St. John’s during their acceptance remarks. Judith H. Germano ’96J.D., Founder and Lead Counsel at GermanoLaw LLC, said: “It’s a surprise and a great honor…my 30th reunion year, which is very special, and it’s great to be back.” She described receiving financial assistance from St. John’s as decisive in her career: “I took the LSATs but I didn’t have money for law school…Then I received a letter from St. John’s inviting me to apply and offering a full scholarship…it has launched a great career for me.”

President’s Medal recipient Edward F. Smith ’66CBA noted his ongoing connection with his alma mater: “I graduated 60 years ago, and I’ve been very active…as an alumnus…I made some great friends as a student…and we’re still close.” Michael McKay ’91SVC,’94M.B.A., another honoree, said: “The ethics and discipline I learned at St. John’s have guided me throughout my life’s journey.” Christine Marie Goodwin ’96SJC et al., Assistant Provost at St John’s Office of Institutional Research—herself both alumna and staff member—said: “I am truly humbled…to be recognized by St John’s today…My education provided me with a strong foundation in faith & service—values that continue to guide me in my everyday life.”

St John’s University supports initiatives through its centers focused on multicultural efforts; offers more than 100 undergraduate majors across six schools; features campuses in Queens & Manhattan plus international sites; is affiliated with the Vincentian Community—all according to its official website.

As Commencement approaches later this month, university leaders hope these stories will inspire new graduates toward similar paths of impact.
