St. John’s University announced on May 19 that its Sport Management program in The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies is preparing students for careers in the sports industry through a combination of academic coursework, internships, and mentorship from professionals.

The university said the program offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Professional Studies in Sport Management, combining classroom learning with practical experience to help students develop skills needed for roles in operations, facilities, sales, marketing, and athletics administration.

A required internship component is supported by St. John’s Career Services team to ensure graduates have hands-on experience and professional networks established before entering the workforce. The program also supports student-athletes who wish to balance academics with athletic commitments; currently, there are 66 student-athletes enrolled as members of varsity teams or other athletic groups.

Faculty members include professors who work full time within professional and collegiate sports organizations. Matt Bernstein said: “Seeing the students go on to be successful in other places really has been the most glorifying part of it. I’ve had student workers and interns that are now working as Graduate Assistants here and in other places. It’s been a successful program.” Students can also gain experience through graduate assistantships across various departments such as administration, coaching, marketing, athletic communications, ticket operations, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, academic support and more.

St. John’s University supports initiatives through its centers focused on multicultural efforts locally and globally; features campuses in Queens and Manhattan along with international sites; operates as a Catholic institution affiliated with the Vincentian Community; offers more than 100 undergraduate majors across six schools; is dedicated to liberal arts education; and Rev. Brian J. Shanley has served as president—all according to the official website.

The university said that by combining rigorous academics with mentorships from industry professionals—and providing experiential learning opportunities—the Sport Management program aims to open doors for students seeking careers throughout the sports sector.
