Rocky Point High School’s Family and Consumer Science Childhood Development Program was highlighted on April 17 for its impact on both high school and elementary students. The program gives juniors and seniors the chance to work directly with young children while exploring careers in education and related fields.

The initiative matters because it provides practical experience for high school students interested in child development, while also offering support to elementary classrooms. Students are paired with elementary classes from March through June, where they help teachers with morning routines, reading activities, and foundational math skills.

In addition to assisting teachers, the presence of high school students helps foster a positive environment for younger learners. Organizers say these connections encourage confidence and engagement among the children. The program also allows participating high schoolers to earn college credit through Adelphi University.

A key event that marks the culmination of this experience is Field Day, which brings together both groups of students to celebrate the relationships built during the program.

Looking ahead, those involved see continued value in providing opportunities for older students to gain real-world skills while supporting younger learners.
