Rep. Jerry Nadler, U.S. Congressman representing New York’s 12th district since 1992, has used his social media platform to criticize House Republicans and reaffirm support for marriage equality in a series of posts made on August 11 and 12, 2025.

On August 11, Nadler addressed the impact of what he referred to as “Trump’s Big Ugly Law,” stating, “House Republicans keep lying to the American people about who benefits from Trump’s Big Ugly Law. The nonpartisan CBO confirms that it robs the poorest Americans of $1,200 a year while giving their ultra-wealthy donors an extra $13,600.”

In a subsequent post on the same day, Nadler continued his criticism: “House Republicans didn’t have to give the ultra-wealthy a tax cut for private jets while taking away people’s health care. They chose to inflict that pain in order to further enrich their donors.”

The following day, Nadler turned his attention to marriage equality. He wrote, “Marriage equality is, and must remain, the law of the land. The Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges was a landmark for equality, and no family should have to fear that it will be overturned. I am proud that my Respect for Marriage Act is now law as a critical”.

Nadler’s statements come amid ongoing debates over tax policy and civil rights in Congress. As background, Jerry Nadler has served continuously in Congress since replacing Ted Weiss in 1992 and previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1977 to 1992. Born in New York City in 1947 and currently residing in Manhattan, Nadler holds degrees from Columbia University and Fordham University.
