Rep. Jerry Nadler, who represents New York’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently used his social media platform to address two pressing issues: gun control legislation and oversight of immigration detention facilities.
On August 12, 2025, Nadler posted about efforts to strengthen background checks for firearm purchases following a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan. He wrote, “Following the devastating mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan last month, @RepJeffries, @RepThompson, and I led New York House Democrats in a letter calling on New York Republicans to support the Bipartisan Background Checks Act to ensure a background check is performed prior to”. A subsequent post included a link but no additional text: “https://t.co/JUcbFmEk9D”.
Later that day, Nadler addressed concerns regarding oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities. He stated, “ICE continues to unlawfully block me and my Democratic colleagues from conducting oversight of their facilities, in part to hide from the American people the inhumane conditions they are subjecting people to. No administration should be allowed to hide abuse behind locked doors,”.
Nadler has served as a member of Congress since 1992 after replacing Ted Weiss. Before his tenure in Congress, he was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1977 until 1992. Born in New York City in 1947 and currently residing in Manhattan, Nadler graduated from Columbia University with a BA and later earned his JD from Fordham University.
