In recognition of World Food Safety Day on June 7, the New York State Departments of Agriculture and Markets (AGM) and Health (DOH) are emphasizing their efforts to improve food safety for residents. The state employs a network of inspectors and specialists who examine retail food establishments, manufacturing plants, dairy facilities, and restaurants. Advanced laboratories in the state focus on analysis, investigation, and research to protect public health.

Starting on World Food Safety Day, AGM will initiate a week-long social media campaign to educate consumers about safeguarding New York’s food supply. This includes a trivia contest aimed at debunking food safety myths with an opportunity for participants to win prizes.

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball stated, “Each year as we recognize World Food Safety Day, we are proud to share with New Yorkers that the State has a strong team of inspectors and scientists working hard every day to keep New York’s food supply safe.”

State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald added, “Keeping food safe is essential to protecting people’s health.”

The educational campaign will feature social media posts highlighting the work done by department staff daily. These posts will cover topics such as third-party grading services and verification audits provided by the Farm Products Unit.

AGM also plans a trivia contest via social media platforms to address common misconceptions about food safety.

AGM leads in setting standards with its network of inspectors who annually check over 35,000 retail establishments and 300 dairy processing facilities. Inspections focus on preventing issues that could lead to illness by examining sources, conditions, temperatures, sanitation practices, and handling procedures.

In 2024 alone, more than 22,400 inspections were conducted along with numerous recalls due to contamination concerns. The Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services ensures compliance through thousands of annual inspections at farms and processing plants.

The state’s Food Laboratory plays a critical role in testing samples for biological and chemical hazards. In 2024, it examined over 20,000 samples through more than 440,000 tests.

The DOH’s Bureau of Community Environmental Health works alongside AGM in overseeing over 100,000 food service establishments statewide. Inspection data is accessible online for public viewing.

The Wadsworth Center assists during outbreaks requiring rapid response testing for pathogens or contaminants. It has developed advanced tests for detecting pathogens related to foodborne diseases.

To promote consumer awareness about home food safety practices such as cleaning surfaces often or avoiding cross-contamination between raw meats and ready-to-eat foods—tips have been provided by both departments involved in this initiative.

World Food Safety Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to raise awareness about reducing global cases of foodborne illnesses which affect millions annually worldwide according to WHO statistics.
