New York City FC II announced on May 9 that it has acquired defender Joāo Loiola on loan from Brazilian club Fluminense FC through the 2026 season. The club also confirmed it holds an option to purchase Loiola at the end of the season.
This move is significant for New York City FC II as they look to strengthen their defense with a young player who has experience in Brazil’s youth system. Loiola, who is 21 years old, made 31 appearances for Fluminense FC’s under-20 team and provided one assist during his time there.
Loiola joined Fluminense in 2016 at age eleven and progressed through their academy ranks. He earned his first call-ups to the First Team in 2025. While with the academy, he contributed to several title-winning campaigns, including victories in the Rio U-20 Cup and Leonel Sánchez Lineros U-17 Tournament, and captained his team to win the OPG U-20 Tournament.
The official transaction details state: “New York City FC II acquire on loan Defender Joāo Loiola from Brazilian side Fluminense FC through the 2026 season. The Club has an option to purchase Loiola on a First Team contract at the end of the season.” According to information released by New York City FC II, Loiola was born April 14, 2005; he stands six feet two inches tall and weighs one hundred eighty pounds. His hometown is Duque De Caxias, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
