Beginning January 1, 2025, New York employers are mandated to provide employees with 20 hours of paid “prenatal personal leave” as per the new Paid Prenatal Personal Leave Law (PPPL). The New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has introduced additional requirements effective July 25, 2025.

Employers in New York City must now prepare and distribute a written policy on paid prenatal leave. They are also required to issue an updated Notice of Employee Rights for both new hires and current employees. Employers must provide information regarding prenatal leave on employee pay statements or through separate documentation during weeks when prenatal leave is utilized. Each pay period in which prenatal leave is used should reflect the amount of paid prenatal leave used and the remaining balance for the rest of the 52-week period. Employers can request documentation supporting an employee’s use of PPPL if the employee has been absent for more than three consecutive workdays.
