Good morning, an op-ed by Mike Sapraicone in the New York Sun highlights concerns over a proposal by New York City’s Democratic mayoral candidate, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. The proposal suggests creating a new “Department of Community Safety,” which Sapraicone describes as an “ideological fantasy” that could worsen public safety in New York City.

Sapraicone, who has two decades of experience as an NYPD detective and is the founder of a global security firm, expressed his perspective on effective public safety measures. He emphasized the current staffing crisis within the NYPD, noting that officers are leaving at unprecedented rates, morale is low, and there is a shortage of qualified recruits.

Sapraicone warns that with thousands of officers expected to leave this year alone, the city faces challenges such as fewer officers on duty, slower response times, and reduced proactive policing. He criticizes Mamdani’s plan for potentially exacerbating these issues by reducing police involvement and replacing it with social workers and bureaucrats.
