Congressman Mike Lawler announced on May 20 that the House has passed H.R. 1993, the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 Commemorative Coin Act. The legislation will authorize the U.S. Mint to issue a commemorative coin marking the upcoming anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
The bill directs proceeds from surcharges on these coins to benefit the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, supporting its mission to preserve the story of September 11 and honor those affected by that day.
Lawler played a key role in gathering bipartisan support for this measure and securing enough cosponsors for it to advance. “Almost 25 years after September 11th, the pain and impact of that day remain deeply felt throughout New York and across our nation. For New Yorkers, 9/11 is not simply a dark chapter in American history. We lost neighbors, friends, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters, and so many of our first responders continue to bear the physical and emotional scars of that day,” said Congressman Lawler.
During his time in Congress, Lawler has led several efforts related to supporting members of the 9/11 community. These include work on expediting payments through the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund; collaborating with other lawmakers from New York to secure permanent funding for the World Trade Center Health Program; and working toward awarding a Congressional Gold Medal posthumously to Welles Crowther—a local hero known as “the Man in the Red Bandana” who died saving others during September 11.
Lawler also continues advocating for ongoing support for victims, survivors, and first responders dealing with health challenges linked to exposure at Ground Zero while seeking ways for future generations to understand what happened on that day.
According to information provided by his office, Lawler represents New York’s 17th Congressional District just north of New York City—including all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties—and was rated as one of Congress’s most bipartisan members.
