Konsta Helenius showed confidence during his NHL playoff debut as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4, according to a May 13 report. The rookie forward, who was not surprised about being added to the playoff roster, contributed with six shot attempts and played nearly thirteen minutes.
Helenius’ performance is significant for the Sabres as they look to advance further in the playoffs. His composure under pressure and ability to contribute immediately have provided a boost for Buffalo’s lineup.
“I thought he played an excellent game from start to finish,” coach Lindy Ruff said. “… Thought he skated well, competed hard. He gave us a heck of a game.” Ruff also addressed a disallowed goal involving Helenius, saying, “He initiated the contact with Helenius with his stick coming across the crease, and I thought Helenius did a great job of trying to avoid the goaltender. … A great play by the kid and just a tough review on us.”
Helenius said about playing big minutes late in Game 4: “It’s a great feeling that coach trusts me. I played those types of situations in the AHL but not the NHL yet, so it was great: straight to playoffs and play big minutes. It means a lot.” He described his approach simply: “I mean, it’s same hockey game. Been playing that, what, 15 years? Just a little bit harder, but same hockey, so just tried to play my game and trust myself.”
Buffalo’s penalty kill was also tested after committing eight minor penalties but managed to kill off six of seven shorthanded situations. Tage Thompson said: “Our kill’s been unbelievable all year long…they’ve done an unbelievable job…and guys like Sammy are a big piece of that…blocking shots…” Goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made nine shorthanded saves on his return.
Veteran defenseman Luke Schenn entered Buffalo’s lineup for Game 4 and contributed with blocked shots and penalty killing experience. Ruff said about Schenn: “The guy’s got a couple Stanley Cups; he knows what it’s about…I think what he could offer us…was penalty killing and just that veteran leadership in a tough building.”
Looking ahead, Helenius is expected to get another opportunity as Buffalo prepares for Game 5 at KeyBank Center.
