U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Petronilo Castillo Bonilla, a 39-year-old Honduran national, has been charged with illegal re-entry into the United States. The charge carries a potential penalty of up to two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Smith and Assistant U.S. Attorney Fauzia K. Mattingly are handling the case. According to the complaint, on June 24, 2025, Border Patrol agents in Buffalo, NY encountered a vehicle registered to Castillo Bonilla, who had previously been ordered removed from the U.S. When agents approached two individuals returning to the vehicle and asked if one was Castillo Bonilla, both fled in different directions. After a brief pursuit and struggle, both were detained.

During questioning about his citizenship and legal status, Castillo Bonilla did not provide information to the agents. A search of his clothing revealed a Honduran passport. Further investigation confirmed he is not a U.S. citizen or national and was removed from the country in December 2018.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, which aims to address illegal immigration and combat transnational criminal organizations (TCOs).

Castillo Bonilla appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael J. Roemer and was detained.

The investigation was conducted by U.S. Border Patrol under the direction of Patrol Agent in Charge Martin B. Coombs.

It is important to note that being charged with a crime is an accusation; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
