Governor Kathy Hochul responded to reports of environmental damage affecting Ischua Creek by instructing the Department of Environmental Conservation to investigate the incident. She also tasked the Department of Health with monitoring for any possible threats to public health.
In her statement, Hochul said: “Following reports of a significant environmental impact to Ischua Creek, I immediately directed the Department of Environmental Conservation to conduct a thorough investigation. I’ve also directed the Department of Health to monitor for any potential risks to the public’s health. While there has been no impact on public drinking water, the team is continuing to monitor the situation closely. We are committed to ensuring our local communities and the environment they depend on are protected and are taking all appropriate action as the investigation continues. Steps must be taken to ensure accountability and to prevent such a significant incident from ever happening again.”
According to Governor Hochul, there has not been any effect on public drinking water at this time, but authorities continue surveillance as investigations proceed. The governor emphasized ongoing efforts both in addressing immediate concerns and in implementing measures aimed at preventing similar events in the future.
The state is focusing on protecting local communities and their environment while seeking accountability for what happened at Ischua Creek.
