Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced plans to construct a new nuclear power plant in upstate New York, marking a significant shift in the state’s energy policy. This decision aligns with Senate Republicans’ long-standing advocacy for expanding nuclear power as a reliable and zero-emissions energy source.
Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt expressed approval of this development, stating, “Bringing back nuclear energy will add thousands of good-paying jobs back to our economy. I’m glad the governor finally admits we were right.” Ortt views this move as an acknowledgment that previous green initiatives have not met expectations.
The closure of Indian Point, a clean and efficient nuclear facility, under Governor Hochul’s predecessor led to increased reliance on fossil fuels and higher emissions. Ortt criticizes Albany’s environmental policies, such as the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), for failing to provide affordable and stable energy solutions.
Ortt emphasized that while the nuclear pivot is positive, further changes are necessary to avoid past mistakes. He stated, “This nuclear reversal is a step in the right direction, but it won’t be nearly enough if Hochul continues to cling to the same failed playbook.”
