Grameen America marks ten years of advancing health and wellbeing for entrepreneurs

Grameen America announced on May 20 that it is celebrating ten years of advancing the health and wellbeing of entrepreneurs across the country. The organization highlighted its Grameen Promotoras initiative, which aims to improve health outcomes for small business owners who have limited access to mainstream healthcare.

The milestone reflects a decade-long effort to support both the financial and physical health of entrepreneurs, emphasizing that these factors are closely connected. Grameen America said its work helps lay a foundation for resilient businesses and thriving communities.

Since its launch in 2016, Grameen Promotoras has reached nearly 60,000 small business owners with services such as health education, chronic disease screenings, and referrals to the healthcare system in California, Connecticut, New York, North Carolina, and Texas. Through this program, members gain access to educational workshops on nutrition and disease management; screenings like blood pressure monitoring; and help navigating preventative care options including dental and vision services.

Entrepreneurs participating in the program shared their experiences. Lidoine, a coffee shop owner from New York City said: “Before Grameen America, I had a doctor, but I didn’t have anyone to talk to about health or wellbeing. The Grameen Promotoras provides beneficial health tips and information about preventative care and has helped refer me to health specialists and book appointments like mammograms.” Rebeca, another member who owns a juice shop in New York City added: “Focusing on my health helps me stay healthy enough to work. As a small business owner, Grameen Promotoras makes finding doctors easy. The Promotoras have reminded me to get regular check-ups every six months and provided referrals.”

Keiry, Site Manager at Grameen America in Houston said: “Our community often carries the weight of barriers that can make success feel out of reach. Yet through our mission we help open doors that once seemed closed. When members have knowledge they can manage their businesses more effectively… their businesses can grow.” Luci from Charlotte described her role as a community educator: “Many people in our community lack knowledge about chronic diseases… As a Promotora I am the bridge to helping entrepreneurs access affordable health… What inspires me is that our members come from different backgrounds but everyone shows up with drive…”

Looking ahead as it celebrates this milestone year, Grameen America reaffirmed its commitment “to investing in the whole entrepreneur because healthy entrepreneurs build stronger communities.”
