Governor Kathy Hochul announced on April 3 a proclamation designating April as the Month of the Military Child in New York State. The move aims to recognize and support children who are separated from a parent serving in the military. As part of this initiative, Hochul directed that 14 landmarks across New York be illuminated purple on Friday, April 3, to honor more than 1.6 million children nationwide — including nearly 36,000 in New York — with parents serving in the armed forces.

The proclamation draws attention to the challenges faced by military children and highlights their resilience during times when their families experience separation due to service commitments. “The children of the men and women of our armed forces demonstrate extraordinary resilience and courage — especially during times of military conflict,” Governor Hochul said. “This month reminds us of the critical importance of supporting these children with community, resources, and opportunities to guide them through uncertainty and navigate the unique challenges they face. As we honor their sacrifices, I remain committed to ensuring military families feel supported throughout April and beyond.”

April is observed annually as Month of the Military Child across the United States to acknowledge strength, service, and adaptability among young people whose parents serve or have served in uniformed branches. Federal data shows that last year there were 35,655 such children living in New York State alone—including those with parents on active duty or serving with National Guard or Reserve units. These children often move six to nine times before graduating high school—about three times more frequently than their civilian peers.

To mark this observance further, New York’s Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS) will hold both virtual and in-person events for military families throughout April. Building on record attendance from last year’s programming, DVS has expanded its outreach for this year’s events.

Viviana M. DeCohen, Commissioner for DVS said: “Military children serve in ways that are often unseen, yet deeply felt—through sacrifice, resilience, and a quiet courage beyond their years. We are deeply grateful to Governor Kathy Hochul for her steadfast leadership and genuine allyship in uplifting New York’s Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families. As 14 State landmarks shine in purple this evening, we are reminded of the bright enduring spirit of our military children — strong adaptable and inspiring us all.”
