Swimming at several Long Island ocean beaches has been suspended following an order from Governor Kathy Hochul. The decision comes as Hurricane Erin brings flooding, rough surf, and the risk of rip tides to the area. The suspension affects Jones Beach, Robert Moses, and Hither Hills State Parks and will remain in place through Thursday while conditions are reassessed.

Governor Hochul said, “The peak hurricane season is approaching, and we have strong preparations in place to keep people safe. With Hurricane Erin causing dangerous surf conditions along our beaches on Long Island, we are taking proactive steps to protect New Yorkers by restricting swimming at state beaches. I urge everyone to remain vigilant as the storm approaches.”

State officials emphasized that even if local weather appears calm, storms can create hazardous water conditions. Randy Simons, New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tempore, stated: “Even if the local weather is sunny and warm, hurricanes and tropical storms can cause dangerous and unpredictable conditions at our swimming beaches. Don’t take chances. Please follow the direction of our lifeguards and park staff, who are trained to recognize dangerous conditions such as rip tides that may go unnoticed.”

Red flags have been posted at affected parks to signal that swimming is not allowed. Lifeguards are present to enforce these restrictions. Meanwhile, Sunken Meadow and Wildwood State Parks on Long Island Sound remain open for swimming since they are not impacted by the storm.

In response to potential flooding at Jones Beach State Park, maintenance crews have built a temporary sand wall from the East Bathhouse through the Central Mall to the West Bathhouse. At other locations, staff have placed sandbags around vulnerable buildings and removed non-essential equipment from beach areas.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation continues to monitor all state parks for changing conditions.
