Flags at all New York state government buildings will be flown at half-staff to honor retired New York State Police Sergeant Michael L. Piro, following a directive from Governor Kathy Hochul.

Governor Hochul issued a statement recognizing Sergeant Piro’s contributions: “A distinguished member of the New York State Police, Sergeant Piro, stepped up to serve and protect his fellow New Yorkers when it was needed most,” Governor Hochul said. “I am profoundly grateful for Sergeant Piro and his dedication to keeping New York safe, and I join his family, colleagues, and community in honoring his life and service, and send my deepest condolences to those whose lives he touched.”

Sergeant Piro died on January 6 from an illness related to his work at the World Trade Center site after the September 11 attacks. He retired from the New York State Police on March 26, 2015, after serving for 30 years. He is survived by four children and was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia.
