New York Governor Kathy Hochul has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families by highlighting expanded programs that provide financial aid and educational opportunities. The announcement comes in recognition of Veterans Day, as New York continues its efforts to assist those who have served.

The state has broadened eligibility for the Veterans Tuition Award (VTA), allowing more veterans to receive tuition coverage at colleges and universities across New York. The VTA provides awards up to the full cost of State University of New York (SUNY) undergraduate tuition for eligible veterans attending approved institutions or vocational training programs.

Governor Hochul stated, “Veterans and their families deserve more than recognition — they deserve meaningful support that helps them thrive. By expanding financial aid, strengthening resources, and celebrating their contributions through events across the state, we are ensuring New York remains a leader in supporting those who served so they can build brighter and more successful futures.”

Other state programs include the Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship, which covers attendance costs for children, spouses, and dependents of New York residents severely disabled or lost in military service; Regents Awards for Children of Deceased and Disabled Veterans, which offers annual undergraduate awards; and Veterans Education (Vet Ed), which supports education and training programs compatible with GI Bill benefits.

Throughout the year, New York hosts events designed to help veterans access these educational benefits. An upcoming event co-hosted by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services will provide information on financial aid programs and personalized guidance for veterans seeking higher education.

Dr. Guillermo Linares, President of HESC, said, “New York’s veterans and their families have given so much in service to our country. They’ve put it all on the line to protect our freedoms and our way of life. At HESC, we’re proud to honor that service by helping them continue their journey through higher education. Supporting those who’ve sacrificed for us is one of the most meaningful ways we can give back.”

Viviana M. DeCohen, Commissioner of the Department of Veterans’ Services, commented on education’s role in transforming veterans’ lives: “Education is one of the most powerful forces for transformation in a Veteran’s life. It opens doors to new careers, strengthens families, and honors the skills, discipline, and leadership that our incredible Service Members bring home. Under Governor Kathy Hochul’s leadership…New York continues to ensure that Veterans and Military Families have clear, supported pathways to success in the classroom and beyond.”

James Hendon, Commissioner of NYC Department of Veterans’ Services added: “New York honors service best by opening doors. When a veteran or surviving family member can afford a SUNY or CUNY classroom, that’s stability today and mobility tomorrow. Our message is simple: help yourself by using these benefits — and help one more veteran do the same.”

Leaders from SUNY and CUNY also expressed appreciation for state initiatives supporting veterans:

“SUNY is proud to offer an excellent, affordable education for all New Yorkers, including our veterans,” said John B. King Jr., SUNY Chancellor.

“CUNY values veterans…and is committed to helping them obtain the education…they need,” said Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, CUNY Chancellor.

State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa encouraged servicemembers to learn about available financial aid: “Higher education has the power to open doors…For New Yorkers who have served our country…it represents an exciting new chapter…”

Senator Toby Ann Stavisky emphasized providing opportunity as well as recognition: “It’s important that New York continues to honor our veterans not only with words but with opportunity…These benefits reflect our shared belief that no veteran should have to choose between their service and their future.”
