New York Governor Kathy Hochul has criticized the White House for its recent decision to potentially withhold broadband funding from rural communities in upstate New York. The governor’s statement comes after the state enacted new regulations aimed at increasing safeguards around artificial intelligence.
“We passed some of the nation’s strongest AI safeguards to protect kids, workers and consumers. Now, the White House is threatening to withhold hundreds of millions of dollars in broadband funding meant for rural upstate communities, all to shield big corporations from taking basic steps to prevent potential harm from AI,” Hochul said.
She continued, “This is unacceptable. In New York, we protect working families and set the standard for the nation. I will continue to fight to ensure our state remains a global leader in responsible AI.”
The dispute centers on federal broadband funds that are designated for expanding internet access in less populated areas. The governor argues that withholding these resources would negatively impact residents who rely on improved connectivity.
