Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that $25 million in capital grants are now available for volunteer fire departments across New York State. The funding is part of the Volunteer Fire Infrastructure & Response Equipment Grant Program, which aims to help departments upgrade their facilities and equipment. Applications are open until February 25, 2026.
The program is administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. In October 2024, the first round of this grant was awarded to 88 entities throughout the state.
“Our volunteer firefighters represent the very best of public service, answering the call to protect their neighbors and putting their lives on the line without hesitation to keep New Yorkers safe,” Governor Hochul said. “Investing in their training and equipment is an investment in the safety and resilience of our communities. This funding provides our volunteer firefighters the support and resources they deserve and ensures they have the tools they need to continue their critical work.”
The program focuses on several objectives, including ensuring that fire stations and training facilities meet current building codes, improving firefighter health through updated protective gear and decontamination systems, and supporting regional efforts to consolidate fire service resources for better emergency response.
There are two main funding options: $20 million is allocated for construction, renovation, or facility purchase projects such as fire stations, substations, training towers, classrooms, exhaust systems, and decontamination showers; $5 million will go toward purchasing equipment like personal protective equipment (PPE), communication radios, rehab gear, PPE washers/dryers, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus fill stations, and testing devices.
New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Jackie Bray stated: “Our volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line every day helping keep their communities safe from fire and any number of other emergencies. At a time when they are being called upon like never before, it’s essential we ensure these departments have the infrastructure and equipment they need to get the job done. Thanks to the leadership of Governor Hochul, we have been able to carry this program forward and ensure fire departments statewide are getting the support they need.”
Eligible applicants include villages, towns, cities, fire districts with all-volunteer membership providing local government services; nonprofit fire companies (pending prequalification); counties; and municipal shared services entities. Applications must demonstrate how requirements are met.
The Office of Fire Prevention and Control offers various services including firefighter training and education programs aimed at enhancing public safety throughout New York State. The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services coordinates efforts related to emergency preparedness for threats ranging from terrorism to natural disasters.
