Local leaders, volunteers, and young people gathered at the Glens Falls Area Youth Center to plant a sugar maple in the front yard, according to a May 20 announcement. The event marks a significant moment for the center as it celebrates the opening of its new 3,000 square foot Matt Congdon Wellness Center.
The expansion is described as much-needed support for many local children. Carly LaMay, assistant director of the center, said, “This Wellness Center will help our kids grow mentally, physically, and emotionally in so many ways.” She also added: “It’s very symbolic that we planted this sugar maple right in the front yard of this new addition to the Youth Center, where we will be able to watch it grow alongside our kids for years to come!”
City officials attending included Mayor Diana Palmer and Tree Commission member Peter Taylor. The planting was also supported by Nate Mattison, project coordinator at the youth center.
The event highlights community efforts to improve facilities for local children while providing them with opportunities for personal growth. The symbolism of planting a tree reflects hopes that both the youth and their new wellness space will thrive together over time.
Looking ahead, organizers say they expect both the newly planted maple and expanded services at the youth center to benefit generations of Glens Falls children.
