FOIA Request to Stony Brook University regarding Public University FY 2024 Employee Salaries on December 5, 2025.
Empire State Today has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Stony Brook University seeking detailed records of employee compensation for the Fiscal Year 2024. The request was sent under the New York Freedom of Information Law, N.Y. Pub. Off. Law sec. 84 et seq., and asks for the information in an electronic format.
The requested records include comprehensive data on all individuals employed by the university during the specified fiscal year, which is typically defined as spanning from September 2024 through July 2025. However, if Stony Brook University operates under different fiscal-year boundaries, Empire State Today has asked that the records be provided according to the university’s official definitions, with clear indication of applicable date ranges.
Specifically, Empire State Today seeks access to records containing various data fields such as Fiscal Year, Employee Name, Gender (if recorded), Age or Year of Birth (if not exempt), Date of Birth (if not exempt or limited to month/year), Employer Name, Title or Position, Department, Hire Date, Compensation Amount (including base pay and any additional pay), Compensation Type (e.g., salary, hourly wage), and Employment Type (full-time or part-time).
Acknowledging that not all fields may exist in every record, Empire State Today requests that all responsive records be produced regardless of whether each field is present. If any portion of a record is deemed exempt from disclosure, they have asked for all reasonably segregable non-exempt portions to be released in redacted form rather than withheld entirely.
Empire State Today has also requested a fee waiver on account of its role as a media organization committed to gathering and reporting news to the public. The organization emphasizes its mission to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency through access to public records.
The requestor is affiliated with The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation that aids media companies and advocacy groups in investigating governmental agencies using Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws.
Our team will continue to keep you updated as we gather and report news related to this request and other matters of public interest. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further clarification regarding this matter.
