Elmer Rodríguez, the Yankees’ No. 2 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and is scheduled to start Sunday’s game against the Mets at Citi Field, the team announced on May 17.
The move comes after left-hander Max Fried was diagnosed with a left elbow bone bruise and placed on the 15-day injured list. Rodríguez said, “I grew up watching this series. I know how intense it gets. It’s fun to be here.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Rodríguez, “I have high expectations when he walks out there. It won’t surprise me if he goes out and pitches well.” The club will adjust its rotation by having Ryan Weathers and Will Warren pitch Monday and Tuesday against Toronto.
Rodríguez made his Major League debut on April 29 against the Rangers in Arlington, pitching four-plus innings of two-run ball in a no-decision. He pitched again against Texas on May 5 at Yankee Stadium before being optioned when Carlos Rodón returned to the rotation. Reflecting on his experience so far, Rodríguez said, “It was good to learn how things work here. Obviously, I know I’ve got good stuff. I’ve just got to trust myself and attack guys. There are more experienced hitters here than in Triple-A.”
A Yankees spokesperson said Dr. Neal ElAttrache reviewed Fried’s imaging and agreed with team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad that several weeks without throwing were recommended for Fried.
Gerrit Cole is expected to rejoin the rotation before Fried returns from injury after making his sixth Minor League rehab start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
