Last Word on Sports reported on Jun. 3 that Donte DiVincenzo is progressing in his recovery and a future return to basketball is now considered possible following his Achilles repair surgery.
DiVincenzo’s operation was performed by Martin O’Malley, MD, a foot and ankle surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. O’Malley has a significant reputation in professional basketball circles, having previously conducted the same procedure on Boston Celtics player Jayson Tatum last May, less than 24 hours after Tatum sustained an identical injury.
Dr. O’Malley uses the SpeedBridge technique for Achilles repairs. This method reinforces the repaired tendon with an anchor-based support structure intended to accelerate healing. The approach has influenced how National Basketball Association teams view and manage Achilles injuries, which were once considered career-ending but are increasingly seen as recoverable setbacks.
The Hospital for Special Surgery contributes to community health by providing specialized orthopedic care and advancing musculoskeletal research, and it has achieved consistent top rankings in orthopedics while holding multiple Magnet designations for nursing excellence, according to the official website.
The hospital also extends its specialized orthopedic services through partnerships in regions such as Southwest Florida and focuses on delivering high-quality care aimed at improving mobility while advancing research in orthopedic surgery and rheumatology, according to the official website.
