Cornell men’s track and field began competition at the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships on May 16 with a series of notable results in both throwing and running events.
The opening day saw sophomore Peter Northrup win the hammer throw title, achieving a personal-best distance of 65.65 meters. Northrup set three personal records during his attempts, each surpassing his previous best, which placed him third all-time in Cornell program history and ranked him 22nd in the NCAA East Region. He secured victory after responding to a late challenge from Princeton’s Asher Robbins by improving his mark on his final attempt.
Associate head coach Kevin Phipps said, “Peter went to finals with the lead from an 8-foot personal best. In round five, Princeton’s Asher Robbins, the favorite for the competition, took the lead. Peter responded adding seven more feet to his best on the very next throw, ending the day as the champ with a throw of 65.65/215’4″.”
Other field event highlights included senior Kegan Mancabelli finishing second in pole vault at 5.08 meters and freshman Zachary Davidson placing sixth at 4.98 meters. In decathlon action after five events, freshman Kyle Velasco was fifth overall with performances including an 11.95-second run in the 100 meters and a long jump of 6.41 meters.
On the track side, junior Pierre Attiogbe advanced to finals by placing second in his heat for the men’s 1500-meter race with a time of 3:50.89. Senior Ryder King won his heat in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.85 seconds—a result that moved him to fifth all-time at Cornell.
Several other athletes qualified for Sunday’s final rounds: sophomore Panashe Nhenga advanced in both sprints (100m and 200m), while freshman Edgar Thielens progressed to finals in the men’s 800 meters after finishing seventh overall.
The preliminary round for men’s 400-meter hurdles was rescheduled due to an improperly set hurdle; officials will conduct it as two heats on Sunday instead.
Cornell is scheduled to resume competition on Sunday morning.
