Cornell Big Red Men’s Rowing – Heavyweight finished tenth in the team standings at the Eastern Sprints Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond, improving its score by four points compared to last year, according to a May 17 announcement.
The event is significant for collegiate rowing programs as it serves as a major competition among top teams. Cornell’s performance, particularly in the second varsity eight (2V8+), highlights progress within the program and provides momentum ahead of national championships.
The team’s best result came from the 2V8+, which won its Petite Final and placed seventh overall. The crew advanced out of Heat No. 3 with a third-place finish behind Syracuse and Dartmouth before securing victory in the afternoon final by nearly two seconds over Penn and Yale. The first varsity eight (1V8+) also reached its Petite Final after finishing fourth in its heat, ultimately placing fourth in that race—less than five seconds behind Yale’s winning time.
Other Cornell boats competed in their respective heats and finals: both the third varsity eight (3V8+) and fourth varsity eight (4V8+) finished fifth in their Petite Finals. Northeastern and Brown showed notable improvements in overall standings, while Yale experienced a decline compared to previous years.
Cornell Big Red Men’s Rowing – Heavyweight is affiliated with Cornell University, competes in the Ivy League, features Big Red as its mascot, operates as a collegiate rowing program, and is based in Ithaca, New York, according to the official website.
Despite not qualifying directly for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship through placement at this regatta, Cornell remains eligible for one of eight at-large invitations to compete at Lake Natoma later this month.
