The Cornell men’s heavyweight rowing team will travel to Worcester, Massachusetts, this weekend to participate in the Eastern Sprints Championship on Lake Quinsigamond, according to a May 15 announcement.
The event is significant as it marks a key postseason opportunity for collegiate crews. The Big Red will race in five events during morning heats starting at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, with finals scheduled from just after 1 p.m. until nearly 5 p.m. Both sessions are available via paid livestream on Overnght.
Todd Kennett, the Spirit of ’57 Director of Rowing and head coach of Cornell men’s heavyweight rowing, said the team has made progress this season despite recent challenges with illness and final exams affecting practice consistency. “Our results are closing on the leaders,” Kennett said. “We still have a way to go and every second is a battle.” He added that lineup changes due to these factors have made it difficult to find rhythm but noted optimism among the rowers as conditions improve: “As exams end and more guys recover, I can feel the optimism and positive vibes overtaking all the negatives.”
The championship also serves as a qualifier for national competition; specifically, the first seven IRA-eligible finishers in the varsity eight (1V8+) will secure bids to the IRA National Championship in Gold River, California. Other boat classes have varying qualification criteria based on institutional eligibility.
Kennett highlighted that for many seniors this would be their final collegiate race regardless of national qualification: “This is the end of the season for almost 16 guys,” he said. “I was very touched by the energy of the group… Our culture is continuing to grow in a very positive direction.” Attendance at this year’s regatta requires advance ticket purchase instead of cash entry at gate as in previous years.
Cornell Big Red Men’s Rowing – Heavyweight is affiliated with Cornell University and competes in the Ivy League; its mascot is Big Red and it operates as a collegiate program based in Ithaca, New York, according to the official website.
